My Approach

Having a positive relationship with your therapist is the most important component of successful therapy.

My approach to therapy sessions is different for each individual or couple I work with. As a guide, I will work to understand your specific goals and support you as you implement a wide range of strategies for healing and growth, helping you find both short-term relief and lasting fulfillment.

I strive to create a respectful, safe, open and compassionate environment during all of my sessions. I genuinely honor the courage it takes you to reach out for help, and I take your privacy and confidentiality very seriously. That said, once you and I have established trust and a positive rapport, I believe the tone of counseling sessions can be light-hearted and humorous at times.

My desire to help a variety of different clients drove me to gain additional training for a wide range of specialties, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Somatic Attachment Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Mindfulness-based Psychotherapy and Wilderness Therapy—all of which can be specifically tailored to your personal interests and history.

Depending upon your needs and therapy goals, I will often suggest opportunities for practice outside of sessions. For example, if you and your partner are struggling to understand how you are contributing to tension in your relationship, I may ask you to slow down your arguments at home and actively listen to what the other is saying. Additionally, you may choose to practice mindfulness at home in order to soothe escalating tension, stress or frustration.

My therapy philosophy is very similar to my life philosophy: Relationships are incredibly important, and positive communication is an essential component to meaningful relationships. Having fulfilling relationships with our partners, family, friends, coworkers, community members and even our therapists is one of the keys to maintaining a peaceful and rewarding life. In fact, a positive therapeutic relationship has been proven to be one of the greatest determiners for successful therapy. In sessions, I demonstrate how to communicate compassionately, helping you implement communication strategies in your life and also bolstering the strength in our own therapeutic relationship.

My goal is to not only be caring, genuine and present during my sessions, but also to focus on reflecting and matching your preferred styles and beliefs. This deeper level of understanding helps me better advocate for your needs, and ultimately allows you to develop greater self-awareness and inner-strength.
